It’s always a happy happy day when Soda Pop announce they’re bringing out some new miniatures, but that is nothing compared to the squeals of delight when they finally arrive on the dark side of the earth and I get to open up the boxes.
Today we’re going to look at their latest offerings – Nyan Nyan – a SDE limited edition release (possibly for the upcoming Forgotten King Expansion (coming out 2014), possibly stand alone – she’s not very Fae) .. and Another in their range of Candy and Cola minis – this time in resin
Let’s take a look at Nyan Nyan first
In the box, we have her player card, a hermetically linked treasure card, and a pre-assembled mini – again, hermetically sealed to stop all the Awesome from leaking out.
It seems the the packing worked – still Awesome. She’s pre-assembled, but there are no real issues with gaps I would have glued differently. The material is once again the res-tic plastic everyone seems to be using these days, which is such a pain to clean up. The sculpt itself is the same glorious SD anime quality we have come to expect from Soda Pop. If you’ve loved their previous stuff, this one won’t disappoint.
Mould lines are not perfectly placed, but are pretty minimal. Even considering the material, I’m not dreading the clean up on her.
RK special release Candy and Cola – in Resin!
So when I saw these 3D renders going up on the Soda Pop site, and heard they were for a Gen Con limited release I died – in a bad way. I do not want to miss these beauties, and so often these con releases are impossible to get in Australia. I emailed soda pop, and (with their usual fantastic customer service) they said they’d soon be putting them up on the website. I live again!
Now I haven’t worked in resin much. But it does produce nice minis and great detail when done well. These ones have nice details, nice lines, and so many parts. So … Many … Parts
Oh – did I mention – resin and metal mini. I don’t get it myself. One arm is metal. everything else is resin.
There must be something I’m missing. Maybe I’ll figure it out when I put her together.
Sadly, for a high end company using resin, there are some really really nasty mold lines on this one. Big steps in really awkward places to clean it up.
Curves and smooth limbs are going to be a nightmare to keep the shapely lines of the 3D render.
However for the other sections, the detail is perfect. I’m glad they chose not to use Res-tic. I would rather they had gone with metal. Maybe the weight and pinning would have driven me nuts though. Pinning in those thin limbs is often a pretty painful process.
Some of the spots where the sprue meets the mini are going to be a bit annoying too. Re-smoothing her but from that injection point is not going to be fun.
Epilogue …
For today the cleanup has beaten me. I was hoping to show off an assembled Candy for the last photo, but I am Flu-y and have lost to the mould lines. Maybe I’ll do something clever with the basing so I have an excuse to show her off later.
Until next time
Cheers
